Coping Mechanism

A coping mechanism is simply the way a person handles pain, stress, or overwhelm. The automatic strategy the brain reaches for when things get hard. And here’s the thing every man going through this needs to understand: her coping mechanisms are not the same as yours, and neither of you chose them consciously.
If you’re falling apart right now and she looks completely unbothered, it’s tempting to read that as “she doesn’t care” or “I didn’t matter.” But that gap you’re seeing isn’t about how much the marriage meant. It’s about two different nervous systems handling the same devastating event in two completely different ways. Yours might show up loud: the anger, the crying, the sleepless nights. Hers might show up as silence, as busyness, as posting like nothing happened. Neither one is more “real” than the other.
This is subconscious, not strategic. The primal, protective part of the brain reaches for whatever coping mechanism has worked before, and it does this automatically, without her sitting down and deciding to perform happiness for the world. If she’s spent years, maybe her whole life, coping with pain by hiding it from you, from friends, from herself, that’s exactly what she’s doing now. She’s not hiding it well because she’s a good actress. She’s hiding it well because she’s had a lifetime of practice.
Here’s why this matters for you: as long as you’re trying to decode her coping mechanism as some kind of message about your value, you’re stuck. You’re spending energy on her nervous system instead of your own healing. Her coping mechanism is about her. Your job right now is to get clear on yours and start building ones that actually serve you.
