Agency

Agency is the sense of ownership you feel over your own thoughts, feelings, and actions. It's the opposite of helplessness. When you have agency, you are not at the mercy of what your spouse says, does, or decides. You are working with the parts of this situation that are actually yours.
Rachael Sloan brings this term up because agency is what gets restored the moment you stop trying to control your spouse and start focusing on yourself. When you shift your attention away from her and onto how you think, feel, and react, you regain your agency. You feel calmer and more confident. You start to behave like the best version of yourself, someone who is kind, curious, and empathetic, with clear emotional boundaries.
This matters because divorce strips away so much of what feels like control. You didn't choose this. You may not want it. And in the middle of that, it's easy to feel like a passenger in your own life, reacting to whatever your spouse does or says next. Agency is how you climb back into the driver's seat, not of her choices, but of your own.
Ask yourself a simple question: which version of you can actually save this marriage, or build a good life if it ends? The overwhelmed, hopeless, anxious you, or the calm, confident, kind you? Agency is what makes the second version possible. It's not
about forcing an outcome with your spouse. It's about reclaiming the parts of this experience that were always yours to begin with, and building from there.
